Dear All,

I am doing a concept phase study of feasibility of circulating fluidized bed boiler. While working, I came upon a question: whether there is any boiler which can run both on natural gas and coal?

If there is such equipment then I would like to know the manufacturers of dual fired boilers.

Regards,
Nabeel

Nabeel,

I know about dual oil/gas fired boilers where dual burner guns for oil/gas are interchanged for oil/gas firing.

However, a coal fired boiler has fundamentally a totally different construction. They have a stoker grate for burning pulverized coal.

It must require a very special design to have both gas firing and coal firing in the same combustion chamber. I have really no idea of such a dual coal/gas fired burner.

Regards,
Ankur.

As Ankur said, dual coal gas boiler (if exists) must be of special design (so of cost beyond normal). Dual firing is understood as possibility to burn both fuels simultaneously and at any combination of their quantities. Liquid fuel - gas fuel dual firing is common; and I think it can be realized through same burners nowadays, so a liquid fuel burner may be able to burn also gas. Dual coal gas burners are not heard of and may not exist in the market; this does not exclude firing coal and gas in a boiler through different burners.
From historical view point, Australian alumina plant had the seasonal flexibility to shift from fuel oil to coal (1970s or 80s) depending on price. And power stations burning peat (turf) of low heating value can simultaneously burn liquid fuel to ameliorate combustion (read it, but not found in WWW). These are not examples of coal dual firing (as defined above), but indicate need of it and steps toward it. Fluidized bed coal boilers of pressurized type (slightly over atmospheric pressure) seem almost suitable to burn coal simultaneously with liquid or gas fuel, if they have not managed it already.
Above indicates future of dual firing (with coal and some other fuel) for boilers of big capacity e.g. serving power stations. Probably search can start from this point.

Dual fired boilers - boilers that can burn either solid fuels or liquid and gas fuels - are old technology. I say "old" because I used them and specified them. I was involved in this application when processing corn cobs, oat hulls, and even sugar cane bagasse to extract Furfural. The solid residue was always burned in boilers that had dual-fired capability. The burning of the solid fuel was either through stokers or pneumatic conveying.

Major boiler designers and contractors like Combustion Engineering in the USA did this routinely. There should be no technical problem in having one designed and built. There might be a problem in the economics. To find out more information, you should contact major boiler designers and manufacturers. You don't tell us where you are located, so you make it difficult for our members to recommend anyone you can contact.

Thanks a lot for the helpful replies. I will surely contact major boiler design companies with my query. I am located in Pakistan, since we do not have any major boiler design company here, therefore I will be contacting foreign suppliers for a customized design.

By dual I do not mean that the boiler will use both the fuels i.e. coal and natural gas simultaneously, but these two fuels will be burned separately. This I think is achievable with separately designed burners in a single boiler. However I will contact the designers and get the information.

Hello,

I am also looking for a coal fired burner. Currently i have a rotary furnace and i am using Natural GAs fired burner; however i need to switch from natural gas to coal gas and install a system where we produce coal gas from coal and then be able to fire this gas through a coal gas based burner into our rotary furnace.

I am new at this so if you could name exact names of suppliers and send me links then that would be appreciated
