Hi
I want to know which software(Pipephase or OLGA)is more reliable for simulation of a onshore-offshore pipeline with 25 km length which transmit 3 phases reservoir gas stream.
what is the limitations , PROs and CONs for each one.

Both OLGA and PIPESIM are equally good softwares for steady state pipeline flow assurance analysis.

However OLGA scores over PIPEPHASE on two points:

1. It can perform transient analysis of 3-phase flow which is a limitation for PIPEPHASE.

2. The P-V-T database of OLGA is one of the most extensive and very close to real-life pipeline flow conditions specially for 3-phase flow.

The downside for OLGA is:

1. It is not as user-friendly as PIPEPHASE

2. Requires extensive hands-on training specially if you need to do transient analysis

3. Probably much more expensive as a software than PIPEPHASE (I don't know the actual license fees, you need to check this out),

Hope this helps.

Ankur.

Dear ankur,

Some correction, PIPEPHASE does has transient analysis module it is called TACITE.
If I recall, this is sold as separate unit module

It can do the same features as OLGA, but the accuracy is not as closed as OLGA
So "processengineer1998" it is depend on your application and the state of your project
I you required a transient analysis that required very stringent accuracy

Better go with OLGA, but if it is for preliminary, you can go by PIPEPHASE and TACITE configuration

For detail, you can go thruu the developer website

Doug,

I had some exposure to "Stoner" during my tenure at Bechtel in KSA. It does handle transient analysis but was not capable of handling multi-phase flow. Did a fair job of handling single or 2-phase flow. Transient analysis convergence took unusually long times and there were instances where it hanged while converging transient flow. The older version required writing statements like in a fortran program for running the program.

All this was 4-1/2 years ago and I believe that further advances might have improved it's utility. It used to be a standard software used in Bechtel offices worldwide.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ankur.

Not sure if this is still an active thread, but I have some friends who are pipeline engineers that have also looked at a simulation software called "Flowmaster". Since I haven't spoken to them for a few weeks, I'm not sure if they have selected that, Stoner or Pipephase, but I thought I'd throw it out there...

Best of luck!
