Hi, I want to design a storage tank for propane.

Volumen:30000m3
Propane pure
Temperature: -50°F
Pressure: Pressure vapor at -50°F almost 13psig
Type: Double containment tank
Environmental conditions: T=22°C (normal), T=30°C (summer), T=15°C (winter)
Located near the beach in the kilometer 170 of Lima,Perú
Material of construction: Carbon Steel

But, I dont know what type of insulated material should I use?
Maybe perlite,polyurethane,polystyrene,etc.
And how much cost each type od material?

Thanks in advance

Luis:

There are some confusing aspects regarding this query.

You posted in the Industrial Professional Forum and you say you “want” to design a refrigerated Propane storage tank with a capacity for 30, 000 m3 (188,694 barrels = 7,925,160 gallons). This is a very large refrigerated storage tank. Please tell us how (or why) you are desiring to design such a large vessel when you have little or no experience in insulation. And also please tell us if you have any experience in such projects. It would help tremendously to know the nature and reasons for your query so that we can help with that concept in mind.

Unless you are working for a large Peruvian fabrication shop with a license for the design, I don’t see how you could have a lead position in determining the insulation requirements. I have process designed many storage tanks when I worked in Peru in 1963-67. Most were for 250 psig and -30 oF service. The mechanical design was done by a fabrication shop located in Callao and I selected and applied the required insulation. These were small tanks compared to yours, and at that time I selected Polystyrofoam as the insulation medium.

For your application I would select FoamGlas insulation for some very practical reasons. Visit the Pittsburgh Corning website at http://www.foamglas.com/industry/en/ and you can find out all you need to know about this product. Specifically for your type of tank, go to: http://www.foamglas....nk_walls_roofs/

I have also applied this same type of application to low temperature tanks in Peru. If you have a serious industrial application project, it should be no problem to obtain a reasonable cost estimate on the insulation required – whether you apply it yourself, or have an outside contractor do it.

I hope this information helps you out.

We have used Perlite for LPG Tanks with capacity of 45,000 m3.

Dear Sir,

we use PUF (Polyurethane Foam) for first 3 meter of shell then perlite.
we use resilient blanket which sticks to the shell.

also we have perlite concrete, cellular glass & dry sand under the bottom plates.

i cant attach anything!!!!!!!!!!!!
if give your email, i will send its general arrangement.
