Hi,

I have Bayonet Heater (0.98MMBtu) in Storage Tank. I need to heat the material from 20C to 50C, and for that flow required for 120 psig steam is 1100 lb/hr. And in order to maintain the temperature at 50C the flow requirement is 25 lb/hr. I am not sure if the Temperature Control valve (at the inlet of the Heater) works for such a big range.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

chem55,

I don't think you need a control valve with capacity of 1100 lb/hr. If you supply less steam it will just take longer to heat up the contents from 20 deg C to 50 deg C. You need to ascertain what time period you are looking for the contents to be heated up.

Alternatively, when the tank temperature drops to 20 deg C you can open the control valve 100% from the temperature controller and also ask the operator to open the control valve bypass to push in more steam in order to heat up the tank contents rapidly. This requires operator intervention and this also needs to be evaluated for it's feasibility.

The third option could be check up with a control valve vendor (Emerson, Masoneilan) to check if they can supply a control valve with such a high turndown on steam flow rates. They should be definitely able to provide you the right answers.

Ankur.
