Dear experts,

I am currently working in an Engineering Design company, but i am thinking to move to operations in a refinery, in order to have more hands-on experiences and competencies.

The way i could enter this industry would be via the "Performance Control" service, under the Valorization & Optimization department Manager, but i wonder if this job really requires technical involvment in operations.

What i actually know is that the performance controller in a refinery:
- evaluate the performances of the plant against the monthly program and budget
- evaluate how these performance can be improved by means of a LP modelling/optimization tool
- follow the material balance of the plant
- create performance indicators

However, i have difficulties in precisely representing myself the performance controller job itself and its technical requirements (in terms of knowledge and competencies).
So my query aims at gathering some advice and testimonies from those among you that have already worked in or in interface with this service.

I could summarize my query by the following questions: What are the typical daily activities of a performance controller (if any)? and Why a process engineer would be required to perform those tasks?
