Dear all,

I am currently a 4th yr chemical engineering student in the UK, I am sorry in advance if I have posted in the wrong section. I assumed as this is a more of a general safety topic regarding regulations it could go here. What the problem I am specifically having at looking at the Health & Safety implication of carrying out a processing plant in Norway. It is easy for the UK as we follow COSSH and COMAH regulations which dictate the hazardous chemicals which are permissible for use and the quantities which are allowed. These are are outlined by our health and safety governing body - Health & Safety Executive. As this process is not process is not complex there are not any really process safety issues, however there will be occupational safety problems due to the chemicals used. One in particular is formalin solution:

- Formalin (<0.1% solution used) - produces Formic Acid, Bis(Chloromethyl)Ether which is carcinogenic

Formalin is the one i am really concerned with in Norway. The quantity of formalin being used and purity is so small, it doesn't even fall into the COMAH regulations for the UK. However i am unsure as to its role in Norway. What I am struggling to find is information on this stuff in Norway, so now i don't know whether this could be used. I would really appreciate it if you could provide guidance on the Health and safety of these chemicals in Norway. Would it be safe to say you follow the same health and safety as the UK ? In recent years much of Britain’s health and safety law has originated in Europe. Proposals from the European Commission may be agreed by Member States, who are then responsible for making them part of their domestic law.I have been searching the web and came across The Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority. I initially thought this was the government agency focusing on occupational safety and health, but there is not any actual data on the website i can find.

any help would be grateful.

Thanks
