Dear All

I am using Hysys to model a reactor.
I am using the conversion reactor to model a reaction that contains pure Silicon in it.
But in the components I cannot find Si. How can I work around his problem?

Thank you

Try defining Si as solid hypo or use DIPPR / HSC database loader; hope Si would be available at least in one of them.

Hi Aberdeen, which version of Aspentech that you are using?
Since on Aspentech HYSYS version 7.1 you can utilized Aspen Properties database
so you can select Si from the Aspen properties data base rather than from the normal HYSYS library

please consult with you software vendor or developer for this matter

I tried both as a normal hypo and a solid hypo. Even though the component gets added there is no reaction taking place in the conversion reactor.
How do I use the DIPPR database in HYSYS. I am using HYSYS 2006 version.

Hi Erwin

So I installed Aspen properties into my system. now how do I use it to add something like Silicon to my existing Hysys simulation. Is there a documentation for this? I am using version 2006

Hi Aberdeen,

It is not just matter of installing the Aspen Properties,
you also have to see whether you have the license for the Aspen Properties databank
To add a component to an existing simulation, just simply go to the basis environment on HYSYS and
add the component from the Aspen Properties to your existing component list
it will directly added to your component list on the main simulation

Try to check with Aspentech, go to support portal(support.aspentech.com)to see whether your Aspen HYSYS 2006 can be upgraded to the latest version
on the latest version (Aspen HYSYS 7.2) it is much more easier to configure the Aspen properties databank

Hi Erwin

So I have got the version v7.2 now.
In aspen properties which selection is to be made
1) Aspen properties enterprise database
2) legacy properties database

When I add the components in hysys through aspen properties option, I am able to add the components but when I open the components individually the columns have <empty> written in them so there are no values. Also when I try selecting a thermodynamics it shows "Failure generating Aspen Properties Problem Definition" this I suppose is due to the fact there are no values in the component data like temperature dependent properties, critical properties etc.

Do I have to enable CAPE-OPEN or is it by default enabled?

Is it possible to create a component list using aspen properties as my aspen properties is working fine, I would be able to import the list to hysys I hope....

Dear Aberdeen,

It should be Aspen Properties Enterprise Database (APED)

What do you mean by selecting thermodynamics?
Is it the fluid package selection or something?
I haven't got any problem of using this Aspen Properties in HYSYS on version 7.2

But you have to know also, that Aspentech has publish a lot of patches for this HYSYS version
may be it can be resolved if you install all the patches

It can be found in support.aspentech.com available free for download
and I think you can also ask for detail of your problem there
I mostly use this support portal to resolved my problem with aspentech software
the response can be as fast as 1-2 hour after you submit the incident depent on your crutiallity

And No, you don't have to enable CAPE-OPEN and etc, because it is not running based on CAPE-OPEN. Try to get the patches, and whether it resolved the problem
or my suggestion is to first re-install the software, and make sure you have a microsoft SQL installed on your computer before you install the software.

When I'm installing this on my windows 7 laptops, it shows step by step of what software is missing and where to find it, I'm not sure whether are you getting this message or not during installation

And one more that I can say to you is.
Aspentech software istallation is not a simple as it used too, as I thnk they also trying to fight against piracy

Hope this helpfull

Thanks for help and advice Erwin. i appreciate it.

I have another question about the kind of reactor to be used when we have silicon in the reaction.
Even though Silicon is solid it is powdered and and then reacted in a fluidized state. How can this be accounted for in defining a reaction, cause its a vapor phase reaction but at that condition Silicon is solid. And while defining the reaction we have to specify the phase of the reaction. Using overall is not helping. Any suggestions??

I believe that no reaction is taking place on solid phase.
since in basic chemistry, what react on the solid phase is only the molecule which
is at the surface of the solid (which contact with the reactan gas),
yes it will effect on the required time for the silicon to react
but I'm not sure whether HYSYS is capable of doing this

I recommend that you try to contact the support, may be Aspen Plus will be a better solution
that HYSYS, as Aspen Plus is much more known in the chemical and petrochemical industry application
rather than HYSYS.
