Dear colleges, please help me with question. Our company wants to incorporate process simulation on our EPF. We have oil, gas and LPG production site. What will be the best for process simulation in steady state and dynamic simulations - Hysys or Unisim or Prosim? Now I am using a trial edition of these software. I will very glad to get some advices. :)

zinchenko,

HYSYS & UNISIM have almost identical capabilities. HYSYS is older whereas UNISIM is comparatively new. HYSYS being older is used by many companies active in the engineering and design related to oil & gas.

Honeywell, the owners of UNISIM claim some better features than HYSYS. For more details on UNISIM refer the following link:

PROSIM is less known than either HYSYS or UNISIM but many consider it to be a better software for modeling amine treatment processes (removal of hydrogen sulfide and CO2 from natural gas) compared to HYSYS and UNISIM.

In my opinion, al the three can serve the purpose of modeling oil and gas processes. Considering that, the final consideration then boils down to the cost of the software package and the after sales service related to software upgrades and service support provided by the software supplier.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ankur.

Unisim is actually a copy of HYSYS version 2006 if I'm not mistaken, Unisim born due to anti monopoly that is regulated in the united state.
But even the developer of Unisim said that they are same with HYSYS at lower cost, I would not believe it right away, because some how HYSYS has the benefits of having more experience and they are improving in the area of where we said that they lack of, such as in absorption process and also hydraulics calculation where in further version they introduce such as glycol package, enhanced DBR amine, new Hydraulics tool calculation and etc. So I can say that HYSYS is still different with Unisim.

While for Prosim, it is now develop to Promax if I'm not mistaken. This is claim to be the best simulation software for sour system, H2S and CO2 and this also the feedback that I had from some licensor, which they are using this simulation software to design their system. It is well known for rigourous calculation of chemisorbtion and also column hydraulics.

I have never done a study to actually compare all of this three software even that the company has it all, but from my experience, HYSYS is giving quite close value to the actual condition. Since I have cross check the HMB generated by HYSYS and from licensor for amine unit by using ProMax, the value is quite the same (with different only around 5-10% maximum) and all of our client is preferring to HYSYS as the simulation software to be used for upstream oil and gas.

Also, Prosim does not have a dynamic simulation. HYSYS and is UNISIM have
