Odor Control From Waste Water Treatment Units
#1

I am looking for some solutions for controlling the nuisance odor emanating from waste water plant units which are open to atmosphere such as "Aeration Tanks", "API Separator", "holding basins", "neutralization tank" etc.
One possibility could be to spray deodrizing chemicals on top of the tanks / pits as a mist cloud. to suppress the odor.
Could there be some other means to suppress the odor?
Are there any specialized vendors who provide know how and technology for such odor suppressing operations?
Hoping to hear from some of you regarding this matter.
Regards,
Ankur.

very innovative idea brought by you, as you descibed that One possibility could be to spray deodrizing chemicals on top of the tanks / pits as a mist cloud. to suppress the odor.but while areator is running how long deodrize will last, instead of spraying deodrizing chemical on top of areation tank we can continueosly dose deodrizing chemical in recycle sludge(bio sludge reflux from clearifier back to areation tank) with some spefic rate then it may work, but what will be the adverse effect on biomass we have to study,(i guess deodrize is organic matter so biomass will eat it and will become healthier

I heard about Fuchs Oxystar Aerator. It is good waste water treatment device.

Mr. Ankur,
Can you please specify some of the deodorizing chemicals ?
How about using Activated Carbon ? It works well as a deodorizer, apart from multiple other benefits.
Thanks.

Raj,
This is a very old topic and was specifically targeted for odors emanating from open to atmosphere tanks encountered in a waste water treatment plant in a refinery.
The main issue in this query was how to gather the waste vapors from all the atmospheric tanks before treating them. Using activated carbon for odor treatment is not something new. It is a well established technology. However, activated carbon has its disadvantages in terms of regenerating the spent activated carbon and subsequent disposal of the finally depleted activated carbon which is an environmental issue.
Using incinerators to destroy odoriferous volatile organic compounds is considered to be a more environment friendly option since there are no disposal issues for any toxic and / or odoriferous compounds. A properly designed incinerator will allow mostly carbon dioxide and water vapor as products of combustion to be released from the incinerator vent or stack.

Ankur.

Thanks for the explanation.
But can you mention few chemicals that are used for deodorizing purpose as you mentioned in post#1. ?
Thanks.

Raj,
I do not know the exact chemical composition of these chemicals since these are sold only with trade names. But "Hydrogen Peroxide" is frequently used for treating odors arising out of sulfur compounds such as H2S, thiols (mercaptans). Some links are provided below:

Hope this helps.
