Any gas compression application where either due to chemical reaction or solids entering the compressor casing from the suction connection can cause deposits on the axial blades altering the blade profile and degrading the compresor performance.

According to the "Compressor Handbook" (Paul C. Hanlon):

A centrifugal compressor can be easily cleaned during normal operation (design
speed) by using mild abrasives such as cooked rice or walnut shells. More common
is the use of liquid cleaning agents sprayed into the process and into the return
channel areas of the compressor.

To summarize, compressor suction lines should be thoroughly cleaned as part of the pre-commissioning procedure for compressors before proceeding for commissioning. Similar to pumps, conical start-up strainers may be provided in the compressor suction line prior to start-up to trap line debris and weld spatter.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ankur.
