Hi everybody,

We have been facing some control problem in high vacuum distillation column for fatty alcohol purification since its initial startup. The control loop in question is a traditional strategy for product composition control (temperature/distillated flow cascade control). Basically, we not observe substantial temperature changes with reasonable flow changes or after a long period of time the temperature changes suddenly. We checked the thermocouple positioning and it is consistent with the design requirements. However, the thermocouple insertion length sounds us quite small, because we found out only 100 mm of insertion into a column with 2.250 mm of inside diameter. Please, could anybody provide some guidance for recommended thermocouple insertion into structured packing?

Additional information:

Packing type: SULZER M252.Y.
Temperature set point: about 210 oC.

Thanks
William Novaes.

To share my experience with BX packing (sulzer) , the insertion is # 150 mm .
Here I'm talking thermowell , the thermocouple is inside the well surrounded with oil.

Note : You should consult Sulzer for advice.

Hope this helps

wnovaes,

You should also contact the licensor company who designed the unit, because insertion length differs from one licensor recommendation to others and usually the insertion length are based on their research and experience.
