Hi all,

Can anyone briefed me the sizing of breather valve cum flame arrestor in the case of oil/emulsion tank having flash point of <23 C.

Sure. I’ll brief you on what I have always done and what I always have project engineers under me do: prepare an accurate data sheet detailing the required capacity to be relieved and the MAWP of the tank or vessel in question. Next, submit this information to potential suppliers of acceptable relief devices and flame arrestors. Let the supplier fill in the selected models, sizes, and other information regarding the devices that will do the job safely and according to specifications.

As an aside, I would not employ a Flame arrestor. The reason is that this device is a dubious one and of questionable worth. Please refer to our SEARCH ENGINE and find the related threads having to do with the value and usefulness of flame arrestors. You will find that API definitely is dead set against using flame arrestors on storage tanks. They are considered more of a hazard and risk than anything else. But, that is my recommendation.

thanks Art,

Actually I have to give the sizing calculation of breather valve to the client and in that case I need a design procedure to find out the size of the breather valve. Also, as you mentioned that "prepare an accurate data sheet detailing the required capacity to be relieved ", I want to ask you how can I fix the required capacity to be relieved?
Please share the design procedure or calculation if you can.

Gprocess,

Are you familiar with API 2000? If so, please refer to it for required capacity calculation, otherwise start to read in order to apply it for your requirement.

Indeed, sizing calculation of breather valve would be submitted by relevant vendor and as Art mentioned you should prepare an accurate data sheet including the required capacity to be relieved...
