Hysys Vs. Promax

Could anybody explain about the differences between Hysys and Promax for simulating sweetening units.
Which one is more reliable?
I've heard that new versions of Hysys use the same property packages that promax use.
has any body known from each revision this modification has been made?
thanks alot

briefly speaking....
- for sure, Promax is recognized as the best tool to simulate Amine plants.
- the difference between Hysys and Promax is not limited to the property package.
- Hysys has an extension (to be paid separately!) dedicated to Amines but also this tool is not as accurate as Promax is.
If you want to see a discussion on this subject you can go to

There are many others....

Anyway, in my experience doing this stuff and along with the opinions of the people I've met in the industry, the consensus is that ProMax is better in doing simulation for Amine and Sulfur system than Hysys.
I heard that Hysys has developed DBRAmine that claims to rival what ProMax can offer, but I cannot personally test it for myself.
Anyway, both are being used in the industry and I've been involved in projects where Hysys and ProMax were used to simulate amine columns.
That said, a simulation software does not preclude the use of sound engineering judgment when doing your system

Also I have some other questions:
1- I've attached 2 files(hysys, promax) for my case. All conditions are the same, but the differences between H2S composition at top of column are very different (0.0078% for Hysys and 0.013% for promax) and also for CO2.
Are there this much difference between results of 2 softwares?
2- what's the number of ideal trays in such simulations? Is there anyway to determine it with simulation softwares or should be determined mathematically?

Ali,
I looked at your models. The ProMax model is incomplete. You did not enter any information about the column internals. ProMax needs that information to calculate the residence time. That is essential to calculate the rate based absorption of H2S and CO2. So, the comparison is not apples to apples quite yet. I normally see a significant difference, especially with MDEA.
Please post your results once you get them. Also, is this for an operating unit?
As far as the number of ideal stages, it is the industry standard to use a real:ideal ratio of 3:1 for amine units.

Hi
I just came across this post. Actually HYSYS has released a new version now that has technology that AspenTech built in-house (separate from DBR Amines). It has rate-based calculations and ENRTL property package. It is claimed that this new one is better than ProMax because of rate-based calculations and other things. HYSYS supports Heat Stable Salts modeling also.
Thanks

Every new release of Hysys claims to be better than ProMax (which Hysys has never really delivered on their promises to do so), but I wouldn't buy that hype until I see a good side by side comparison of an actual operating unit. Until then, I will stick the stellar track record ProMax has.
