I'm searching for a procedure on how to clean our sulphuric acid storage drum. Our plant's 98% H2SO4 drum is a horizontal drum with a capacity of ~1900 L. It was reported that there is an accumulation of sludge in the ower portions of the drum which prompted the opening and cleaning of the drum. A small amount of acid (around 2 inches high) was retained in the drum along with the sludge.
I was thinking of diluting the Sulfuric acid first before trying to inject any basic chemical into the drum. Will this be a good first step in removing the acid?
What chemical do you recommend in neutralizing the acid drum? NaOH? ammonia?
My main concern is the heat release upon addition of water and/or the alkaline species. Can this issue be addressed with the rate of dilution/neutralization?
Lastly, what parameters can we possibly use as an indication of the "endpoint" of the cleaning process? Will the drum pH suffice?
Thank you in advance for your support!
