I wanto know the design procedure of side stream filters for cooling towers. calculation of height of different filtering media used in side stream filters. can anyone help me in this regard

We do not get involved with sand type filters, but have done side-steam using centrifugals. You generally need a pump unless you go from the pump discharge back into the sump.
For one idea, look at:

If you are intending to use sand filter type side stream filter, the design will depend on the quality of raw water or soft water that is being used for make-up to cooling tower. The number of cycles of recirculation that you are using for blow down will also dictate the sizing of the filter.
A portion of (typically 5-15%) cooling water pump discharge is taken to side stream filter which is normally a vertical dished end cylindrical column having a distributor at the bottom and typically 5-6 layers of gravel and sands of different particle sizes. The particle sizes shall depend on the TS in the makeup and blow down water. The filtered water is taken back to the sump of the tower.

i am a user of the vertical dished end cylindrical column having a distributor at the bottom and now i will introduce the advantage and the disadvantage of this kind of filter:we now have a properly recycling water 1000m3/h for a design of a 1500m3/h cooling tower. From the practical usage of this side filter we find that it need rare maintenance and we don't have to waste an additional pump for this process and we properly have 5% of total water flow back to the sump and about 0.5% of total water flow for the discharge. The advantage :saving energy for pump and rare maintenance; The disadvantage :great waste of water and lower the efficiency and the most fatal one is we can not the "clear water as we expected".more details about the usage of this kind of filter suo_ma@yahoo.com
