Hi

i will just be real quick. Hopefully a kind soul comes along to explain this alright!

I am modelling a fired heater aka furnace in hysys to preheat a feed to the desired temperature before entering a reactor. In hysys, there are several modules that can achieve this. Some of the more pertinent variables are the air/fuel ratio, type of fuel etc. I understand tat the fired heater module is dynamic (or is it?) so it is unable to simulate a steady state heating process. But would you recommend other modules such as a conversion reactor, heater and heat exchanger combined units to achieve the same objective? If yes, dear moderators, which would you advise on and why?

Thank you for your time and valuable experience!

Well, I assume it is for a university project? You could always use the heater module in hysys to do it. It is not necessary to use a fired heater. What you can do is setup the combustion reactions, use conversion reaction, specify 100% conversion, add to FP, make 2 streams, one fuel and one air stream, mix them, send to a conversion reactor and send that outlet gas to a heater module to heat your feed.

If you need the detailed calculations like radiant, convective heat transfer, heat flux, tube diameters, tube arrangement, stack losses etc, you could still do the calculations by hand and just use the heat duty for hysys. Then you wouldnt have to use the heater module.

A quick search reveals a thread with a similar topic and contains a useful download.
