We are a smaller sized company and so far all our P&ID's were either manually drafted or via regular AutoCAD.

Now there's a plan to go electronic and we were wondering which Package to go for. I wanted to hear other people's experiences or recommendations.

What are pitfalls to look for while choosing a package?

I took some software (e.g. AutoCAD's P&ID module but that seems very clunky) for a test drive and it looks awfully complicated. We aren't a refinery with a large team and thousands of drawings. We have a small team of ~10 engineers and some off-site contractors and consultants.

Are there any suitable products people can recommend? Or is our use case to small to use commercial P&ID software and we'd rather be better off sticking to brute force AutoCAD 2D drafting with some symbol libraries thrown in.

For the older engineers, has the paper to electronic P&ID's transition been very productive? Is there value a dedicated P&ID program adds over a generic 2D drafting package?

Hello,

What difference it makes between manual drafted (hand drawn) and with a software like AutoCad. If one ensures that the hand-drawn P&IDs are neat & clean and no hassles in reading then get these hand drawn P&IDs scanned. Of course if drafted in auto-cad like software making changes in soft is perhaps makes the drawing readable.

Addition to Auto-cad (trained professional requirement is must) like software, Microsoft Visio is also an economical option to draft these P&IDs. Hope it helps you.
