I have a piping system that we want to protect from flame propagation, if the arresting unit is <3 ft away from the inlet to a thermal oxidizer, would a detonation arrester be required or is a flame arrester acceptable? I have called vendors and gotten different responses.

Basically, can the flame speed plus (or minus, depending on flow) gas velocity obtain sonic speed before the arrestor?  What diameter is the pipe?  What is the fuel?

I would consult the thermal oxidizer supplier. And, I don't think you can stop a detonation. But you can stop a deflagration.
