Good day everyone.

I would like to seek your expert opinions regarding addition of breakout flanges in slurry piping.

I would like to ask if there is/are any relevant standard which states that slurry piping must have breaking flanges to give provision for cleaning of plugged lines during maintenance. As we know, solids accumulation inside pipe may plug lines, especially when the velocity is low. Though flushing connections are installed, it will be better to have breakout flanges at regular intervals along slurry piperuns.

I am glad to hear your ideas on the aforementioned.

Kind regards,

Ralph

Ralph,

As far as i know, considering breaout flanges in slurry piping might be indicated in ASME B31.11 titled: "Slurry Transportation Piping Systems"...

Then try to find it there...

I have tried browsing over the entire ASME B31.11 (as you have mentioned), unfortunately, it does give any statement that imposes installation of breaking flanges for slurry service pipelines. Anyhow, thank you for your suggestion.

I am looking for international standards that enforces that particular requirement.

I am glad to hear other ideas.

Thanks and kind regards,

Ralph

Ralph,

As far as i know such requirement in slurry piping is mostly reflected in relevant piping specification and engineering practices. For example when i involved in a project in which needed to handle the collected sludge at the bottom of a clarifier; the relevant piping spec mandated having a flange in each 6 m of pipeline for easy dismantling in any case it might become clogged due to an increment in flowing sludge viscosity higher than normal value...
