Hi all

 

I have a question to ask you all. I have a heat exchanger that fouls because of water at the tubeside and shell side. I have asked a few qoutation to clean the Heat exchanger. However from the qoutation i found out there is a bit of a difference. They both use pipes to poke through the heat exchangers however the water pressure jetting out from these pipe are different. One is jetting at the lower pressure at 8 bar while the other one is jetting out at 20 bar(which this is more expensive) I want to ask is there a difference between this two cleaning methods? what is the rule of thumb when you want to clean such heat exchanger? Does the design pressue of the heat exchangers matter?

The cleaning force comes from the momentum of the water jet. The higher the velocity, the better cleaning of the heat exchanger. Therefore, the higher pressure jet is preferred. With the high pressure jet, the concern is the erosion force exerted on the tubeside and shellside. Consulting to mechanical engineer for the erosion issue.

The cleaning pressure should be independent to the design pressure of the exchanger. The cleaning pressure will convert to kinetic energy and jet will normally be operated at atmospheric pressure. Should pay an attention to the impact force on the thin tubes.

Exchanger cleaning in industry is generally done by "Hydrojetting" (Cleaning with high pressure water jet) here the impact of water does the cleaning, One should look at the impact force on thinned tubes while carrying out this.

 

The design pressure of exchenger is not a matter here as you are not pressurising it for longer duration,

 

There are lot more safety preacutions one needs to take while performing "Hydrojetting"
