Hi All,

 

I am working on a pharmaceutical project where we have atmospheric storage tanks. These are existing tanks which are designed to handle up to 0.49 barg for both pressure and vacuum. This was apparently the maximum pressure rating before the tanks need to be designed according to pressure vessel codes.

The reason the the tanks are designed to this pressure is because transfer to the tanks is done using compressed air.

 

On transfer into the tank a vent is opened to allow for air displacement, to prevent pressure build-up. There is also a separate filtered vent to allow air ingress during transfer (by gravity) from the tank. Therefore the tank should remain at atmospheric pressure during normal conditions.

 

However we are required to have some measure to prevent overpressure/vacuum on the tank should there be some failure in normal operation. Normally a dual acting rupture disc is used here (we have them in place on higher pressure vessels elsewhere in the plant). However I cannot find a manufacturer who provides adequate rupture discs for pressures as low as this.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions, or know of rupture discs which can be used for this application?

 

The requirements are as follows:

  • +/- 0.3 - 0.49 barg Bursting Pressure (positive and negative)
  • Sanitary use (FDA approved materials, cleanable both internally and externally)
  • Non-fragmenting
  • Rupture Indication is required
  • Max Temp. ~90°C
  • Cyclic Duties

Alternatively, what other than a rupture disc could be used for pressure protection, considering only a single DN100 port available on tank?
