Dear engineers,

I am planning to take part in a training session organized by HTRI. I am sure some of you have had a chance to join the session in the past. I request you to share your views.

I attended HTRI Xist heat exchanger program one-day training in 2011 in Navasota. Greg Starks was the instructor.

 

The course gave a general overview of Xist input screens and how to analyze results. We went over the geometry input for shell-and-tube heat exchangers and how to configure the program for rating, simulation, and design applications.

 

There were several hands-on examples we worked through. Handouts from the training were the input files and the results discussion that could be reviewed after the training. Each student also received a booklet containing copies of the powerpoint slides used in the training. Most of the instruction was directly from the Xist user interface.

 

Due to the leisurely pace of the morning session, the afternoon session seemed rushed with several topics cursorily covered. The course was still useful enough for introductory classroom training.

 

We had a tour of the heat exchanger research facilities which helped provide a high level of confidence in the program's results.

 

There were 19 students in the course. Many were heat exchanger manufacturers. The other 18 students also stayed for the Xvib vibration workshop the following day.

What you would do with handouts? 

If you want to learn about heat exchnager design then there is planty of resources and direction in the forum. Please go through this and if you need more then ask i am sure everyone will help.

I am going to join the training session in few days. If you have any suggestion regarding study material for heat exchanger design then please do.

There will be a lot more to learn about heat exchangers after the HTRI training -- it can be a lifetime study.

 

You might want to familiarize yourself with XIST if you have not used it, but it is not required. To figure out what you do not know, go through each of the input screens and consider each of the terms and how they translate to the physical construction of the exchanger. You will want to understand the purpose of each of the parts of the exchanger and how choices made in the design affect performance. Look at exchangers in the field. Examine vendor drawings to see the details. Imagine yourself as a molecule on the shell side or tube side and try to visualize the many paths you might take through the exchanger. The TEMA standards are quite concise -- read through them. Look back over your college heat transfer course book and relearn the basics of heat transfer theory. The more you know of the "why", the easier you can understand the "how". Have fun in Navasota!
