Dimensions Of Head In A Pressure Vessel

In this picture of the pressure vessel that I have attached a U-tube bundle is attached from the right end. Can any one please tell me the formulas to calculate the radius of curvature and thickness of the right end of the vessel. The thickness has larger at the right end compared to the other areas.

 

The pressure inside the vessel is 140 bar  ,the diameter of the cylindrical section is 3.266 meters.

I cannot design this head as a flanged only head since it is only suitable for vessels with low pressure and small diameter. What is the type of the head in the right end? and what are the formulas to calculate the dimensions?(the thickness and radius of curvature)

 

Also can anyone mention any reference to design the part named "Head C steel" at the right end which is connected to the outside of the vessel and to determine the thickness of the stainless steel liner inside the wall and the tubesheet.

Hello Cheminst,

 

The head on the left is semi elliptical. For the one on the right, you could have used a torispherical head if the pressure was close to 10 bar, but beyond that, torispherical heads are usually uneconomic. Ellipsoidal heads are an option that you can consider. The radius should be similar to the one on the left if it is just for preliminary calculations.

Since 120 bar is quite a high pressure, you could consider using a hemispherical head, as they hold the least strain out of the three and are the strongest formed heads, usually reserved for high pressure applications.

The thickness calculations depend on the mechanical design calculations and cannot usually be guessed based on the shape of the head. If you could mention the process fluid conditions,(P, T, fluid etc) then maybe we could suggest a suitable thickness value.
