Hi, I am designing a steam generator for process heating in a batch process. The peak heat duty of the boiler is around 500 kW, the fuel is methane and excess air is around 15%. I am really confused with how to design a furnace, i tried kern and v ganapathy's books however, i am still unsure as to how to make an intial estimate of my furnace physical size. Any help on this matter is highly appreciated. NB- this is for a design project, thanks

Standards such as the API series may indicate minimum spacings within the furnace or boiler. For example spacing or clearance between burner flame and the tubes, spacing between tubes, spacing between tubes and refractory. Also the internal height may be governed by allowing enough room for all the coils and also how long the burner(s) flames are, so there is no impingment.

From internet , you may find good pointers for the design .
Good luck
