Hi Members, my name is Vikas. I have one query regarding right NFPA standard to use for designing an ethane import and regasification terminal facility. Ethane is usually neither classified as LPG or LNG so for initial layout which is right standard to follow NFPA 59 A or NFPA 58? Ethane is slightly heavier then air Like LPG as oppose to LNG which is lighter and then air and have wider flammability range. Please kindly advise which is right standard to use for initial layout?

Hi,

Not knowing where your project will take place, you should consider discussing with local EPA and or fire brigade.

My 2 cents

The LNG guidelines do not make sense when applied to ethane. I have generally tried to follow the LPG guidelines for ethane and ethylene. In some places, the LPG guides do not make sense either, so cannot be considered strict rules for C2. I did not find an applicable standard for C2, so I applied engineering judgment for safe design while not trying to take shortcuts. There is probably more information about ethylene handling than ethane handling, so consider that when you research. You should be able to apply ethylene 'good practices' to your ethane project.
