Hello Team,

We are experiencing an issue with our 100KL Ammonia storage tank transfer system. The system includes a 8 m³/hr transfer pump that moves ammonia from the storage area to the processing block. However, we have encountered significant challenges during the transfer process, particularly in the afternoon hours from 12 PM to 4 PM.

Problem Description:

  1. Vapor Generation in Suction Line: The transfer lines are exposed to solar radiation, leading to an increase in temperature. This exposure results in vapor generation within the suction line during pump operation.

  2. Heating of Suction  Lines (2" line size): Suction lines are getting heated due to solar radiation, exacerbating the vapor generation issue.

  3. Pump Starvation: Despite checking and confirming that the pump suction strainer is in good condition, we are experiencing pump starvation during the afternoon hours. This leads to a complete cessation of material flow during the transfer process.

We are thinking to insulate the line; however, seek your expertise/experience if that will be enough to cater the issue.

Thank you for your support.

Hi,

Yes, you can insulate the line or paint it in white to minimize the effect of radiation. How big the temperature increase?

Another possibility could be to spray water on the line to cool down the pipe. Easy to test.

My 2 cents

Either insulate, paint with reflective coating or put some shade on the suction line.

I'd do insulation and reflective coating personally.
