As a starter, may I suggest the following resources:

1. "Design Two-Phase Separators within the Right Limits", W.Y. Svrcek, W.D. Monnery, CEP, October 1993. This article was followed with a letters to the editor and a correction in one of the equations but I don't have the date for that.

2. The companion article on Three-Phase Separators is, "Successfully Specify Three-Phase Separators", same authors, CEP, September 1994. This has the corrected equation for reference 1.

3. "Design of Liquid-Liquid Gravity Separators", J. Bocangel, Chemical Engineering Magazine, February 1986

4. "How to Design Settling Drums", B. Sigales, Chemical Engineering Magazine, June 1975

Dear Phil:
Thanks for your reply.
I should add that oily water separators that used for open drain systems are a special kind of separators that usually made of cement. So I think it differs in design in comparison with typical separators made of metal.
Warm Regards.

I think that the publications 421 from API (Monographs on Refinery Environmental Control, Management of Waste Discharges - Design and Operation of Oil-Water Separators) is the best reference for oil-water separator design.

Best Regards,
WSN.

Ok, not a cylindrical separator, I can except that. So here is another source that might be of interest.

J. G. Miranda, "Sump Design for Oil/Water Separators", Chemical Engineering Magazine, pg. 85, November 24, 1975.
