Hi..
I am currently sizing a steam line with operating pressure 12 barg and flowrate 1000 kg/hr. I did some calculation and choose a 3” pipe size.
I am a bit confused regarding which density to choose for the line size. When I’m referring to the steam tables initially I took the gas density of the steam and as a result, the value of velocity and the pressure drop seem too large.
Can I know which density should I take (gas density / liquid density).
Can someone advise me what other info need to be considered apart from pressure drop and velocity?

Thanks in advance.

You might also want to check out the Spirax Sarco and Armstrong websites.

They give you free literature that will help you immensely!

A good sizing chart will take into account your upstream steam conditions. You only need to know what velocity you need for your applicaiton and the pressure drop you can tolerate. The chart can be found in the Spirax Sarco book, which I believe can be downloaded.
