Two teammates and I are working on our senior design project to produce ethylene glycol from ethylene. The first step is the oxidation of ethylene oxide and the second is the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide to ethylene glycol. We know the hydrolysis step can take place under acidic or basic conditions at relatively low temperatures. Or it can take place under neutral pH conditions at elevated temperatures. We only have reaction kinetics for acidic conditions at 55 C. What we would really like to know is the kinetics of the elevated temerature, neutral pH reaction. We have done a lot of patent, internet, and research database searching. All have turned out to be futile. Does anyone know where we can get this information?

Dear Randall Elenbaas

We are students of the Chemical Industries Project course, which is part of the curricula of the Chemical Engineering graduation at Instituto Superior Técnico, the largest Portuguese engineering university.

Our work in this course consists of a project of a new plant in the production of ethylene glycol by hydrolysis of ethylene oxide , covering several issues including selection of manufacturing technology, mass and heat balances, equipment sizing and specification and feasibility evaluation. We've found your topic in www.cheresources.com forum and we wonder if you can help us. We have also done a lot of patent research and decided to use the BASF process, but they don't give any kind of information about the reactors conditions. We don't now the residence time and the kinetics of the reactions. Can you retrieve any kind of information that can help us?

We will be most grateful by any cooperation you can give us on the above-mentioned subjects.

Looking forward to hearing from you, we remain,

Yours faithfully,

Dear,
Please follow the link below and I hope your search will end up with this link. I worked with Ethylene Oxide and Ethylene Glycol plant since pre-commissioning, commissioning to steady state opertaion and next to revamp for capacity expansion. The ethylene oxide hydrolysis is carried out in a PFR with a residence time of 17 min. This reactions uses the EO to Water Molar feed ratio around 1:22 depending on the selective conversion i.e. MEG or its oligomers like DEG and TEG onwards. As it seems to be psudo fisrt order reaction as the water is an excess and its concentraion is not taken into consideration while studying the kinetics and the rate law equation will be in terms of the EO. But the reaction has by products like DEG and other heavy oligomers in which unreacted EO reacts with the respective formed glycols to give the heavy oligomer. And this reaction kinetics is studied as the 4th Order reaction and is available on the link below

There are three licensors for this technology i.e. EO-EG
1. Scientific Design Inc.
2. Shell Inc.
3. Dow Chemicals (Union Carbide Technology).

I hope this will help you to understand a little about your query.
