i think, as aspen is simulation software for chemical engg. process knowhow is key factor. any process consists no. of unit operations and varity of reactor systems, each subject in chemical engg. plays a vital role. but as a general opinion subjects like fluid mechanics, reaction engg., mass transfer and process control are very essential.

Hi Vetri

Recently I went to Aspen tech in Pune for HYSYS Training; I came to know that HYSYS is now made in such a way that it is better suitable for OIL and GAS industry and Aspen Plus is for Chemical industries , Reason is that Hysys Component data base is small compared to Aspen plus . But from my experience HYSYS is user friendly when compared to Aspen plus, you can decide based on which area you have to work on mostly
If you want to learn Simulation software fast, first know the function of all unit operations and if you have time try to refer the process design (so that you can judge the simulation results). MASS TRANSFER, REACTION ENGINEERING, HEAT TRANSFER are essential still you have time refer FLUID MECHANICS also, if you want to learn Control aspects refer PROCESS CONTROL. In any software HELP they will provide Information regarding usage of software, brief function of unit operations, the way how the unit operation work and if not proprietary they provide equations of models etc. . Main things you have to do is
1. Refer books 2. Practice the software 3. Ask experienced people if you have any doubt

Regards ,
Satish

Dear
Addition to the above subjects you have to have a good knowlefge of the Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics which is the base for these simulation softwares. All the best.

I came across a recommendation for the book:

Using Process Simulators in Chemical Engineering: A Multimedia guide for the Core Curriculum, (Version 2.0), 2nd Edition
Daniel R. Lewin, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology
ISBN: 978-0-471-64475-0

as a multimedia resource for learning process simulators. Has anybody used this book and have any reviews on whether it is helpful.

I have a degree in Chemical Engineering and my knowledge is a bit rusted as I haven't used the classical chemical engineering stuff for a while. Am looking to see what would be the best way to come to speed on Aspen Plus. I have access to the Aspen Plus 2006 as well.

dear friend,
as far as the aspen simulation is concerned first you must be be thorough with the all the basic transport subject along with the strong support of thermodynamics (specially EOS and their uses).
i hope that will help you a lot for the study od the simulation on either aspen or hysys
with regards
santosh

I found the Aspentech publications to be difficult to follow - do a search on the internet for specific training modules in Aspen - e.g. Aspen training Heat Exchanger or Aspen training Absorption Column. A lot of universities produce some really good material, which is very easy to follow - and what's more they publish it on the internet for free!!

Dear,
There is Aspen tech Office in Pune and they conduct the training courses so just check when they will have the next session so that you could enroll for the programm. Its basically a three day program and the shedule is always displayed at Aspen Tech Website.
