Hi,
I am a final year chemical engineering student. I was given an oil/water coalescer to design for my design project.
The data for the coalescer is as follows:
Water - 10,570.5421 kg/h
Pyrolysis Gasoline: 1.9784 kg/h
Temperaure - 70 oC
Pressure - 162 kPa
On conducting research i found a liquid/liquid design manual from ACS Separation Limited. This document provided formulae for sizing of the coalescer using Plate Pak Internals. I obtained a volume of 0.189 m3 and using a L/D ratio of 4, D = 0.39m and length = 1.57m.
The length of the coalescing media required was 0.15m.
I am unsure of how to proceed with the mechanical design of this type of equipment. Particularly, where to place the inlet (head or vessel itself). The distance of the coalescing media from the inlet and the required nozzles for the separator itself.
Any other information that can be provided for designing this coalescer will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Alicia

Hello Alicia,
I am not so much familiar with this subject and, usually, this is the kind of job left for equipment specialists. However, I remember some really good materials from Pall Corporation, once I even had a discussion and possible business opportunity regarding water removal from several refinery product streams. I think there is something like "coalescer design manual" in their public library.
