Hi,

I would like to know the types of check valve and orientation of Check valve whether its is placed horizontal or vertical in refinery.

Anshuman,

Check valves could be:

1. Lift type plug

2. Lift type ball

3. Swing type disc

4. Dual Disc

Irrespective of whether it is refinery or petrochemicals check valves are preferentially provided in horizontal pipe runs. Only in exceptional circumstances and where there limitations of piping layout, check valves are provided in vertical pipe sections. As a general rule check valves in vertical pipe runs are avoided. Even in pump discharge lines feeding to a destination which is at a substantial elevation, a small horizontal run just after the pump discharge nozzle is provided which accommodates the check valve.
