Hi,
I am Balagopal. This is regarding the levels of liquid to be maintained in a horizontal separator for efficient functioning. My parameters are: Gas - 62 MMSCFD (max), Oil - 10,000 BOPD (max), Water - 2000 BOPD (max), with a retention time of 1 minute. The operating pressure of the separator will be 1440 psi.
Normally, it has been observed that the maximum gas capacity is handled by the separator when the liquid level is low and vice-versa.
I want to know, whether there is any fixed percentage of levels (both low and high) of liquid to be mentioned for sizing of the separator? I have referred many books on the subject matter and have seen that the maximum gas capacity is always achieved at low liquid levels and maximum liquid capacity is achieved at high liquid levels for a specific retention time. Is there any thumb rule or standard which specifies the percentage of liquid in the vessel as low level and high level, for sizing of the vessel?
Can anyone throw some light on this?

Level connections are set based on required/desired control time (or liquid volume). It has very little with the separation. Separation is achieved by selecting the most appropriate type of the vessel, and the vessel geometry.
