We have a vessel containing 85% acetic acid in water at 305 F . Occassionally, chlorides enter the system. Corossion of the 317ss base material results. In areas where the base metal has thinned we have built up the metal by welding 2205 material on it to the required thickness. The weld overlay is holding up against the attack even as the 317SS in other area continues to thin. However, 2205 coupons placed in the attack have thinned at the same rate as 317SS. Does this make sense that a weld overlay of 2205 does not thin, but a plate of 2205 does ?

hi AKsrey

i think this is really a weird case. between the 2205 overlay and plate, the effect should be the same. if i were you, i'll check whether the material is correct then only i'll go to the thickness. probably the plate thickness is lesser than the overlay so the overlay looks OK without corrosion.
