Hysys Distillation Column Stages Calculation

kindly tell me why hysys does not calculate no. of stages automatically in distillation column ? in order to design distillation column in hysys , does i have to first calculate no. of stages seperately by McCabe theile method.... please clear out my confussion....

If you recall the fundamentals of fractionation processes, you'll know that there is no single solution for the correlation between the number of theoretical stages and reflux ratio - the process designer's task is to find the optimum based on estimated CAPEX/OPEX and site conditions. I'm attaching a reminder from GPSA Databook for your reference.

you have to designe shortcut distillation column in hysys it will give you no.of stage , min. reflux ratio,Perhaps you want from HYSYS to construct, errect, and run your tower in the real plant as well?

Understand the capabilities of any asset you have before you quote that why hysys doesn't calculate the number of theoretical trays. Hysys does have the capability what 'Mehul' has suggested i.e. Shortcut Column where you can optimize your design w.r.t.cond/reb duties, column operating pressure,reflux ratio, number of theoretical trays(here consideration of the efficiency of the actual trays is more important as you should not go on increasing the theoretical trays and then end up with an unfeasible solution).There are many sources available which could guide you in your problem out of which one has already given by 'Zauberberg'.
