Hi

Anybody can help me with step to step guide to design cooling tower side strem filter - sand type.

Hi-

In order to decide design capacity of side stream filter, you first need to calculate cooling tower losses & accordingly shall calculate make-up water requirement. Then by considering material balance for "Total Suspended Solids", you shall calculate amount of circulating water that shall be circulated through side stream filter, so that total suspended solids will remain in desired range.

Cooling tower losses can be calculated as;
1) Evaporation loss: It is 1% of circulating flow per 10 deg F of change in temperature.
2) Blowdown loss: It is calculated as (Evaporation loss / No. of concentration cycle-1)% of circulating flow.
3) Drift loss: It is generally 0.05% of circulating flow.

Based on above losses & cycle of concentration, total make up water quantity can be computed. Once you get these figures, perform material balance for Total Suspended Solids, wherein you should note that solids will get accumulating due to evaporation loss & drift loss, and there will be addition of suspended solids by make up water. However, these solids will get reduced due to blowdown loss.

Hope, this clarifies your requirement.

Regards,
