Dear All,

Do we need blowdown valve for the LPG spheres particularly when we have all fire fighting facilities (i.e. sprinkler system etc) in the plant?

I have never seen the requirement of BDV for LPG sphere but never got the convincing reply.

Appreciate if someone can share the knowledge on this subject.

Regards,

Ajay

design pressure is 17 bar g and thickness is more than 60 mm..

this is very generic question whether we need BDV for sphere (in principal)?

Your information isn't adequate,but generally:

If can not be isolated:Does not required

If can be isolated but is not exposed to fire: Does not required

If can be isolated and is exposed to fire: Required,if mass of LPG inside the vessel (here sphere) is more than 2 tons

any basis for the last quote. I have cheked latest Shell DEP where it says that LPG sphere facilities does not require BDV if there is adequate fire fighting facilities. However, I appreciate if you have any strong reason to support your basis.

If the SHELL design criteria governs your relevant project i recommend you to go ahead based on.
But i haven't seen in API 521 or in company standards other than SHELL to recommend ignoring BDV (actually ignoring emerjency depressurization) due to existence of fire fighting equipment.Especially to avoid the risk of BLEVE in your case (LPG storage) it is recommended to consider lower time for depressurizing duration.
