Typically pipe insulation is jacketed with aluminum. I have a metering and piping system that contains 50% NaOH. This system must be insulated and heat traced to prevent freezing in winter. If the NaOH leaks it will dissolve the aluminum. Do you have a suggestion for another material to use for the insulation jacket?

Rick:

This is just a caution regarding steam tracing of caustic piping (in case you are not already aware of stress corrosion due to hot caustic):

Make absolutely sure that the steam tracing does not physically touch the caustic piping because hot caustic will cause extremely rapid stress corrosion of the piping ... any welds in the caustic piping will be particularly susceptible to such corrosion. Place small blocks of the insulation between the caustic piping and the steam tracer to prevent the tracer from touching the caustic piping.
